01
Mechanism of action
ARA-290 (cibinetide) is an 11-amino-acid peptide derived from erythropoietin that activates the innate repair receptor without stimulating red-blood-cell production. It is studied for small-nerve-fibre damage and neuropathic pain.
02
Observed research endpoints
- Sarcoidosis small-fibre neuropathy RCT: corneal nerve fibre area rose significantly at day 28 in one arm, skin nerve fibres increased, and pain improved in all groups.
- Type 2 diabetes neuropathy RCT: neuropathic symptoms (PainDetect) improved and HbA1c and lipid profiles improved over 56 days.
03
Regulatory & safety context
- Not approved by the FDA or EMA for any indication; research-grade material is not a medicine.
- No potential safety issues were identified in the type 2 diabetes trial; trials were small and short.
