01

Mechanism of action

AICAR is a nucleoside that cells convert to an AMP mimic, activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a sensor that drives many of exercise's effects on glucose and fat metabolism.

02

Observed research endpoints

  • In sedentary mice, 4 weeks of AICAR alone induced metabolic genes and increased running endurance by 44%.
  • In pre-diabetic Zucker diabetic fatty rats, 8 weeks of AICAR (like exercise) prevented hyperglycaemia, improved insulin sensitivity and preserved beta-cell morphology.

03

Regulatory & safety context

  • Not approved by the FDA or EMA for any indication; research-grade material is not a medicine.
  • Listed as prohibited in sport by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
  • Evidence cited here is from animal studies.
