01
Mechanism of action
5-Amino-1MQ is a small-molecule (not peptide) inhibitor of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), an enzyme involved in cellular energy metabolism. Blocking NNMT lowers its product 1-methylnicotinamide and raises intracellular NAD+.
02
Observed research endpoints
- Methylquinolinium NNMT inhibitors were selective and membrane-permeable, and reversed high-fat-diet-induced obesity measures in mice.
- In diet-induced obese mice, NNMT inhibition combined with a low-fat diet normalised adiposity and weight to lean-control levels and produced a distinct gut microbiome.
03
Regulatory & safety context
- Not approved by the FDA or EMA for any indication; research-grade material is not a medicine.
- Evidence is limited to cell and mouse studies; no human trials are cited.
