01

Mechanism of action

Humanin is a small peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA. It is studied as a cytoprotective signal against oxidative and metabolic stress and in the regulation of autophagy and cell senescence.

02

Observed research endpoints

  • A 2023 systematic review describes humanin as counteracting age-related conditions linked to senescence, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, with mechanisms not fully clarified.
  • A 2025 review reports that humanin and its analogue HNG supported cell survival under metabolic and oxidative stress.

03

Regulatory & safety context

  • Not approved by the FDA or EMA for any indication; research-grade material is not a medicine.
  • Evidence is preclinical; no controlled human trials are cited.
