01

Mechanism of action

Glutathione is a tripeptide (glutamate-cysteine-glycine) that serves as the main intracellular antioxidant and is involved in detoxification and immune function.

02

Observed research endpoints

  • 6-month RCT of oral glutathione: body stores rose 30–35% in red cells, plasma and lymphocytes and 260% in cheek cells in the higher arm; natural-killer cytotoxicity more than doubled at 3 months.
  • 4-week RCT in 60 people: oral glutathione lowered melanin indices, significantly more than placebo at two of six skin sites.

03

Regulatory & safety context

  • Sold as a dietary supplement; injectable glutathione is not FDA-approved for skin lightening.
  • Both trials reported glutathione as well tolerated; long-term safety has not been established.
