01

Mechanism of action

Melanotan II is a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist. MC1 activity increases melanin (tanning); central melanocortin activity produces erections and sexual stimulation.

02

Observed research endpoints

  • An early phase 1 study in healthy men reported increased facial and body pigmentation, spontaneous erections, nausea, and a stretching and yawning complex.
  • A qualitative study of 623 online forum entries found use driven by tanning goals, frequent misinformation and concerning practices with unregulated products.

03

Regulatory & safety context

  • Not approved by the FDA or EMA for any indication; research-grade material is not a medicine.
  • Case reports link unregulated use to rhabdomyolysis, kidney failure and renal infarction.
