01

Mechanism of action

Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP; aviptadil as a drug) is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide acting on VPAC1/VPAC2 receptors, causing vasodilation and anti-inflammatory effects in lung and gut.

02

Observed research endpoints

  • RCT in critical COVID-19 respiratory failure: the primary endpoint was not met, though survival from respiratory failure at day 60 was reported as improved.
  • Inhaled VIP in pulmonary hypertension: a modest, short-lived drop in pulmonary vascular resistance without lowering systemic blood pressure.

03

Regulatory & safety context

  • Not approved by the FDA or EMA for any indication; research-grade material is not a medicine.
  • No drug-related serious adverse events were reported in the COVID-19 trial; inhaled VIP caused no side effects in the pulmonary hypertension study.
